The ewok file manager
The ewok file manager (fm) is the central workarea for ewok. It is laid out as follows:
- a coloured navigation bar across the top of the screen (see Navigation)
- (if edit access) a set of buttons providing directory and create operations
(Metadata, Permissions, Upload, and Create; see Directory and Create Operations
- a directory listing table of the contents of the current directory, with
navigation links for directories (in the NAME column), and links for operations
on individual items in subsequent columns (e.g. 'view', 'edit', 'meta'; see
Directory Listing and Item Operations)
- (if edit access) a set of buttons providing operations on groups of files/directories
(e.g. Delete, Rename, Cut/Copy/Paste, Publish - see Group Operations)
Navigation
You navigate (or move around) in the ewok file manager by clicking on two kinds
of links - directory or folder links (in the NAME column) in the current
directory listing; and the shortcut links in the coloured navigation bar across
the top of the screen.
Clicking on a directory or folder link in the directory listing changes the
file manager to that directory.
The navigation bar can include the following items (left to right):
- ewok logo (not clickable)
- VIEW link, displaying the default apache view of the current directory
(usually either the index.html file or a directory listing)
- PUBL link (if this is a staging directory set up for publishing), changing
to the corresponding publishing directory
- TOP link, changing to the topmost ewok directory
- a "breadcrumb" trail, showing your current directory within ewok - all but the
last component of that directory path will be clickable, taking you to the
corresponding parent directory
- (and on the right) a username link, showing your current username - clicking the
link will take you to your ewok user preferences
- a permissions indicator, showing your permissions level for the current directory
Directory and Create Operations: Metadata, Permissions, Upload, Create
If you have (at least) edit privilege for the current directory, there will be a set
of buttons above the contents table providing directory and create operations. These
include the following (left to right):
- Metadata: allows you to update the metadata for the current directory.
See Using metadata.
- Permissions: (if you have permissions privilege for the current directory)
allows you to maintain the permissions for the current directory. See Setting
permissions.
- Upload: allows you to upload files from your local computer to the current
directory.
Create: allows you to create a new (empty) file, directory, or link within
the current directory.
[ Note: "link", in this context, is not an HTML URL or hyperlink, but a symbolic
link (Unix) or shortcut (Windows), which is just a pointer to another file
or directory. To create a link in ewok you first enter the name of your
link, and then (on the next page) the name of the file or directory you are
linking or pointing to. Links are perhaps most useful when you wish to
rename content and want old URLs to continue working, or when you want a
local reference to content that actually lives somewhere else. ]
Directory Listing and Item Operations: View, Edit, Meta, etc.
Below the directory-level operations, a directory listing is displayed in a table.
Depending on your current permissions, this listing includes:
- checkbox - for selecting the item for use with the Group Operations
buttons below (if edit privilege)
- icon - currently distinguishing files, directories, and links
- name - for directories clicking the name link will move you to that directory
- view - displays the item (as rendered by ewok)
- edit - allows you to edit the item in the browser (if edit privilege and the item
is 'editable' e.g. image files are not)
- meta - allows you to edit the metadata for the item (if edit privilege;
see Using metadata)
This is the short listing form. By clicking the 'plus' icon
 in the top-left corner of
the directory listing table you can change to the long listing form (the 'minus' icon
 will then change you back to
the short form). The long listing contains the following additional fields:
- size - the size (in bytes) of the item
- download - displays the item in its raw form without any rendering by ewok
(no templates, text markup, etc.). This is primarily useful for downloading
for editing offline or in an external tool (Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc.)
- link to - for links, this can have an indication of the target item the link
is pointing to
Note that the long listing will always be slower than the short listing because of the
need to determine the size of each file - the short form is recommended for longer
directories.
Short and long listing settings are 'sticky', so that the file manager will default to
whichever you were using last when you return.
Group Operations: Delete, Rename, Cut/Copy/Paste, Publish
If you have edit privilege for the current directory, there will be a final set of
buttons below the directory listing for group operations. These apply either to
the items you have selected using their checkboxes, or, by selecting the appropriate
Scope option, to the entire directory or the entire tree (meaning the entire
directory and all its subdirectories). The following operations are provided:
- Delete - delete the items (no confirmation required!)
- Rename - rename the items
- Cut - delete to clipboard
- Copy - copy to clipboard
- Paste - paste from clipboard
- Paste As - paste from the clipboard and rename
- Publish - publishes the items - see Publishing (if publish
privilege and publishing is configured for the directory)
Notes:
- The clipboard stores only a single set of items (per user), so doing a Cut
or a Copy throws away anything you had put on the clipboard previously
- Cut/Copy/Paste are not shown in publish directories
- Paste buttons are not shown if there is nothing on the clipboard
